Join Food Bank For New York City and GrowNYC at the Union Square Greenmarket to help reduce food waste and ensure that more New Yorkers have access to nutritious locally grown food! During our Farm 2 Food Bank project, volunteers collect leftover produce and other food items donated by local farmers and help load the donated produce onto the truck to be delivered to one of Food Bank’s local member agencies and distributed to New Yorkers in need.
WHAT TO EXPECT: When you arrive at the market, head to 15th Street and Union Square West, and look for our orange and white Food Bank truck. You will be greeted by a Food Bank driver who will provide you with an orientation. Volunteers will receive all necessary supplies including volunteer waiver, gloves and bags for collecting the produce. You may store small belongings in the truck cab during your shift, however, please bring necessities only as space is very limited.
WHAT TO WEAR: All volunteers are required to wear a mask and closed-toed shoes. The program is entirely outdoors and rain or shine.
WHEN: 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm (or when all product is collected)
WHERE: Union Square Greenmarket. When you arrive at the market, head to the corner of 15th Street and Union Square West and look for our orange and white Food Bank truck at the corner by the Starbucks. (If you have difficulty locating the Food Bank truck, visit the GrowNYC tent for assistance.)
WHO: Volunteers must be able to lift 30 lbs. Volunteers age 13 and up are welcome! Minors ages 13-17 attending without an accompanying adult must bring a copy of our youth volunteer waiver signed by a parent or guardian
COVID-19: We follow CDC’s recommended guidelines to keep the company and its employees safe. We encourage you to wear masks or facial coverings, wash/sanitize your hands before coming to the location, and — most importantly — stay at home if you are feeling sick.
